Drummoyne Power U14s/U16s AFL Multicultural Exhibition Game 22nd November.
Our U14s/U16s were invited by the AFL to play an exhibition match against the U16 Multicultural Program participants on Sunday 22nd November
Wow! What a fantastic opportunity for our boys in the 2009 U14 and U16s teams to be invited by the management of the AFL Multicultural Program to play an exhibition game against a select group of U16s boys from diverse backgrounds on Sunday 22nd November.
The AFL has embarked on a program to spread the AFL word amongst various multicultural groups across Sydney. The primary objective of the AFL Multicultural Program is to assist migrant and refugee communities to access Australian Football whether that is as a player, fan, administrator or umpire. A group of boys from various backgrounds: Thai, Afghani, African, Muslim to name a few were selected to play in the Under 16 team which was mentored by former Sydney Swan legend, Michael O'Loughlin. The group has been training for the past few months once a week and was involved in a camp for the few days leading up to the game.
Our boys were a little rusty, you could tell we'd not had a game for three months and for the younger guys in the team it was a huge step-up in strength and physicality. All credit to the Multicultural boys though on a great win, however, winning was certainly not the only thing to celebrate on the day. The sense of excitement amongst the boys from Drummoyne and the Multicultural boys for the great game of AFL was palpable - it was clear that on the day the most important thing was that it didn't matter what your background is, playing Aussie Rules brings everyone together in a way that no other sport can.
Thanks to all the guys who were able to make it on the day. To Mik and Darren for coaching, and to all the parents and friends for supporting the team, and the Multicultural boys, on the day. Also a big thanks to the AFL's Multicultural Program department and all the lovely people we met on Sunday at the game. Thanks to one and all.

EMAIL FROM MARY COSMIDIS AT THE AFL
This weekend was the culmination of the inaugural Indigenous/Multicultural Talent Academy Program for the AFL in NSW/ACT. A big thank you to all who assisted in making this weekend a great experience for a group of kids who are now Australian football converts. The team put on a great show yesterday, overpowering Drummoyne Power for a fantastic win. Thanks Drummoyne for a competitive contest, and to Carl for organising the umpires, David and Lachlan.
