Matt Vicic shares his experiences at the Under 18s State Championships

“Persistence is the key to success” that’s what I found out.

I tried for many seasons to get into the Sydney South TPP team and was successful in 16’s (2011) and again this year in 18’s , but the years I missed out being selected I learnt from the experience and tried even harder next time.

This season (January) we went to Coffs Harbour for the 3 day carnival, I travelled by bus with the team which was an enjoyable experience.

Our squad of 24 players plus coaches’ stayed in motel accommodation with the other teams from all over N.S.W. So overall there were 7 squads, 168 players all looking forward to competing against each other.

We played 2 games (35 min games) per night, in the heat, torrential rain and sunshine.  My team South Sydney had their most successful this year, winning 4 out of the 6 games and losing to Western Sydney in a close game by only 2 points. Overall we finished 2nd.

We were lucky enough to have Nick Davis as our coach; he shared many tips and skills with us not to mention his many “2005 footy memories”.

The major areas that I found to have helped my game out in the past seasons have been, being confident in my own ability, always trying to learn from my coaches and team mates, as well as being persistent and always a team player.

Good luck for season 2012!
