Round 10 Match Report - U11 Black
Easts Red Vs Drummoyne Black U11
Any game against Easts is always a formidable challenge and the 2 goals snapped by Easts within 5 minutes of the first quarter certainly laid down the gauntlet for another tough encounter. Our backs worked incredibly hard to contain the onslaught with tough tackling and persistent chasing. Peter starting off the game in the back line and worked doggedly to minimise the damage the East forwards were doing. He was supported well by Lachlan, Dylan, Lewis and Hugh who were all determined in their resolve to keep East’s scoring opportunities to a minimum.
Angus was moved into the centre midway through the first quarter and his dominance in the ruck was immediately felt. The centres began warming to the challenge with some strong long kicking into the forward line by Rory and Ben, with Jack focusing hard on tackling and reducing East’s opportunities to run with the ball. The forwards were battered by a ruthless defence but to their credit they never gave up and fought every contest. Finally there was a break though just as the siren sounded with a face saving goal by Max.
Not sure what Glen said at quarter time but there was a noticeable change in momentum by Drummoyne as they lifted to contain the well oiled East team. The first score went our way as Max snapped a point within minutes which gave a much needed boost the team. Murali, Alistair, Max and Daniel remained focused and committed against a tough defence. Eventually the reward as Alistair handballed to Rory for a quick snap at goal. Oh the joy for everyone!
The second quarter continued to work our backline hard as East drilled every ball quickly and accurately down the field. To our credit less and less managed to fly through the goal posts and we managed to reduce their scoring opportunities to 2 goals.
All the boys lifted in the third quarter with some strong, confident marking and great passages of play. The Drummoyne defence, supported well by Alistair continued to fight for every ball limiting East’s scoring opportunities substantially. The centre’s started to dominated in the third quarter, winning the ruck contest with Rory eager to win the tapdown from Angus and drive the ball forward. The forwards were kept busy with Max, Ben, Lachlan and Alexander working hard against a strong defence. A lot more of the play was kept in our forward line with many more shots at goal.
The final quarter saw every team member persistently attacking the ball never once giving up against a very polished and skilled East side. The boys started to work their short game with success moving the ball swiftly and accurately down the field. One particular passage was a pleasure to see with Angus kicking to Peter who marked and moved it on to Rory who spotted Ben in the goal square. Under pressure Ben marked and quickly snapped it through for a goal. This highlighted the boys fighting spirit and commitment which was reflected in Drummoyne outplaying and outscoring Easts in the final quarter.
In fact the end score highlighted that both teams had 15 scoring opportunities; Easts 10 5 – 65 and Drummoyne 4 11 – 35. We just couldn’t quite manage to get the ball through the goals as often as we would like but more than matched the opposition with on field play. The boys left the field tired but with huge smiles on their faces and sense of knowing they played a solid and committed game.
