Round 11 Match Report - U5/6s
Under 5/6s Auskick vs Newtown Swans
There was a clear scent of excitement as players, coaches and supporters gathered for the return game after a couple of byes for both the Drummoyne Power and Newtown Swans teams. Power took to the field undaunted by the fact they had just six players up against two complete teams from the Swans - and any one of the Swans players was taller than the combined height of two Power players - Bella and Flynn.
The first quarter saw Bianca and Josh in the centre against a horde of Swans. Bianca battled hard, winning a few hitouts, but the extra numbers made winning the clearances tough. Josh fought hard and sent penetrating kicks deep into the attacking zone. Bella and Jessie in defense had several deep conversations with each other before getting it together to combine well to repel many of the Swan's centre clearances - including one spectacular contested mark by Jessie standing solid at centre half back.
It was at this point that Flynn gave his first signal that this was to be a signature game from the young star in the making. At the bottom of the pack he won a hard possession and sent a towering kick through the uprights. From this point Lachlan and Flynn started combining well and finished the quarter with the Swans defenders under pressure.
The second quarter saw Bella and Jessie move into the centre where they continued the fight against the overwhelming numbers the Swans were able to bring to the ball. The second quarter saw the Power turn defense into attack with one spectacular goal set up by Lachlan in defense winning the ball and getting it to Jess who surged forward, got an effective kick away to Bianca who goaled from 15 metres. Flynn again was unstoppable including a couple of great defensive marks. Bella won a couple of contested possessions and on each occasions made penetrating runs deep into attack. It was at this point that Josh stepped up and was counted with a strong goal - with an assist from Bianca - against the run of play. From this point the Power forwards got on top and the quarter finished with the Swans frustrated in defense.
There were two main highlights in the third quarter. The first was Jess, who, under intense physical pressure from his own team mate Lachlan, managed to break free and slot one home. But the story of the third quarter was Flynn's effort in the centre. He was unstoppable with more possessions than Imelda Marcos. The dominant feature of his game was his 'in-and-under' style, winning the ball from under the feet of the Swans and scampering off unscathed to deliver the ball again and again to his team mates further forward.
At the final siren the Swans were still in front, but Power had fought back hard and had brought the Swans horde to a standstill.
Player of the Match was Flynn.
