The Under 16 Division 1 team ventured north to Acron Oval for a 3.40pm start on a cold afternoon. With the assistance of two Under 14s who’d just finished their own game against Riverview, Joseph Ringer (brother of Kristian) and Tomas Edwards (brother of Jack), the team fielded a full side with one on the bench.

The first quarter got off to a slow start and we allowed St Ives to post some easy goals. Very pleasingly the boys lifted and played with a great level of intensity for the remainder of the game. The tackling was ferocious and there were some great second efforts all around the ground. Most notable were Jack B, Jack E, Taylor and Will in the centre. Tom C and Max Q, both in their first seasons of AFL, showed some wonderful displays of rebound attack from the defensive 50 – well done! Adam wore his man like a glove for the majority of the game in a great display of defence and was assisted by both Hugh & Thomas G who took some wonderful marks and continually put their bodies on the line.

In the forwards and on the wing Richard & Jack S. provided reliable targets as always, and two great marks by our intrepid Under 14s, Tom E and Joe, showed that we had come to play. Luke (Cheesburger), Kristian & Matt were extremely versatile in both attack and defense, adapting their playing style when required. Ben & Tom P provided the touch we needed at the hitouts & ball-ups.

All-in-all it was a really solid effort which resulted in everyone feeling satisfied that we had given it a good shake. The game was well umpired & was played in a very good spirit which was particularly pleasing after a less than friendly previous encounter – so thank you to both the Drummoyne players and St. Ives for making the afternoon a pleasant one. Finally, thanks to Nick Bertino who was the runner (after having already played for the Under 13s and the Under 14s), Thomas Queenan – our fantastic water boy who looked resplendent in his over-sized water boy shirt – thanks for keeping the boys hydrated, and a massive thanks to Zoe Vicic who ran the boundary sans whistle. Her “OUT” could be heard on the opposite side of the ground – well done!

Only 3 rounds left boys. Let’s bring our best game to the table – and hope that we don’t see another Tuesday training called off because of rain. Thanks Mik and Denise for your efforts in getting everyone to the ground.
