Round 12 Match Report - U8s
Under 8’s – Silver vs Newtown
What a difference a week makes! The team turned up today to play and they did it in fine style. After a challenging photo shoot in cold conditions, they took to the ground under grey conditions and dominated play from the start.
The 1st period was all about attack. A great kick from Angus (the Birthday Boy) and some good passing from Christian, saw Daniel make a great run before getting the ball to Nicky and finally to Joe.E who kicked a miraculous goal. This was a great example of teamwork and communication, which carried on throughout the match.
Liam (after 8 weeks without a match!) was always in the right position and ran well with the ball on many occasions, regularly getting the ball forward via Daniel and Oscar.H. Edward’s defensive work was particularly strong in this period.
In the 2nd period, Rod observed that it was “raining goals”! The first originated from some great clearing work by Angus, getting the ball to Christian and Daniel, up to Liam, who surprised the opposition by kicking a low and well directed goal. Multiple goals followed, supported by dominant play by Oscar.H upfront and Edward (who seemed to be everywhere). Angus played well in the midfield, assisted by some good smothering defense by James.
When Newtown looked like they were starting to get a run on towards the end of the period, it was snuffed out by some unrelenting coverage by Nicky, Joe, Riley and Angus.
The final third saw a much more even contest but the good running, ball skills and communication were there for all to see with some great attack by James and Christian and smothering defense by Edward and Riley.
This was a fantastic game to watch, combining good communication and balls skills, with persistence and hunger for the ball that every member of the team can be proud of – well done boys!
Under 8’s – Teal vs Concord
Saturday's game against Concord was a good contest, highlighted by the great teamwork shown by the Teal Under 8s. The team members also displayed a strong sense of sportsmanship, as the Concord team were down in numbers and several Drummoyne players were called upon to play in opposition.
A long, strong run down the wing was the highlight of Alistair's game. Alistair showed he was also a very effective forward, and worked well with his teammates to keep the pressure on Concord in the forward lines.
Darcy was in the thick of the action all day - both for Concord and Drummoyne. His sportsmanship was most impressive and he went as hard at the ball in opposition as he did when playing for Drummoyne.
Hugh put us on the scoreboard in the dying moments of the first third after displaying some good gathering and running ball skills. He was also very physical in defence, and had some good, clearing kicks.
Jack played his typical game - very physical. Jack's not afraid to get in there and put his body into the game to smother Concord attempts to kick. He goaled, took some knocks (and a free after being put in a headlock by an over-enthusiastic Concord player) and took a spectacular backward mark in the final third.
Joel was our equal top goal-scorer and has my vote for the Player of the Day. He showed very strong ball skills all over the ground and had a good running game. He is a smart player who thinks fast and looks for all the opportunities.
Joseph.L played a great game ... both for Drummoyne and Concord, showing a real team spirit. He also displayed a really nice kicking style, with several long, accurate kicks down the ground.
As usual, Meera was a great team player. She is always looking around for her team-mates for the quick, effective handpass. There was a brilliant passage of play in the third, when Meera got the centre tap to Joel, which ultimately led to a goal from Rory. Rory tied with Joel as top goal-scorer for Drummoyne. He would have been our highest goal scorer ... but one of his goals was for Concord! See what I mean about the sportsmanship shown by our players? Rory showed very strong ball skills and the ducking and weaving before one particular goal was a real pleasure to watch.
Toby showed real persistence throughout the day. In one example, he wasn't deterred by a failed shot at goal. He kept at the ball like a terrier until he finally kicked it through the middle. Thankfully, he was playing for Drummoyne at the time, but his fierce determination for the ball was evident whatever jersey he was wearing.
Zayn displayed the teamwork that was the hallmark of the day - he did a great kick to Alistair in the centre, who passed to Jack, then Joel ... then GOAL! What a great passage of play and it all started with Zayn. He was very strong in defence, teaming up with Hugh and Alistair (and, at that time, against Toby, who was getting a lot of play for Concord).
Well done team!
A big thanks to Rod Carter, Ramesh Chinnappa, Peter Adamski, Paul Sabine and John Taylor for their time in the canteen/ bbq.
