Round 14 Match Report - U10
Under 10s vs Newtown
The augurs were consulted. Appeals to the The Lord High Keepers of the Greens were lodged. Assurances regarding the grasses welfare, the player’s welfare and provision of cotton wool given. Even then indications that we would be allowed to actually play were qualified. Since puddles of water weren’t seen on Five Dock Park during the deluge, it was caution beyond virtue. It seemed possible that a heavy dew would stop the show. The sales of Dynamo and Cold Power in the Inner West must really be in the doldrums this winter.
But Lo, the day dawned clear and dry. To note the fact that the pristine and unoccupied Drummoyne Oval looked like billiard table baize in comparison to Five Dock Park would be ungracious ... the game was on.
It wouldn’t surprise many to say that the boys played like they’d barely had a gallop in the past month. For most of the match it was an arm wrestle. A late goal gave Newtown a slight break at quarter time. We won the third quarter and broke even in the last. But in the second quarter Newtown blew us away with 5 straight goals. Given that they won by 32 points, it was the decisive break.
There was plenty of individual endeavour and wholehearted efforts. A team rousing goal from Xavier in the third quarter. A crashing pack mark from Michael. Jonah tying two defenders up like pretzels in a serpentine run. Sam won the centre bounces with regularity. Jack V cleared the defensive zone with booming kicks. Bailey won more than his share of contested ball. Angus took advantages of the spaces on the grandstand side at every opportunity. Will took more overhead marks than in any previous match in my memory. Jack F defended stoutly, especially in the third quarter. Lewis scooted up and down the wings whenever he saw a glimpse of daylight. The Power jumper most likely to be on the bottom of any pack was Thomas. Joshua competed, competed and then competed again. Charlie took some crucial marks and with Lindon defended stoutly in the last quarter when the tide was against us. Ewan got kicks around the park and showed his running flair. Matthew stalked the middle corridor as if it was his personal fiefdom.
But the linking between backs, midfield and forwards was severely disjointed. It seemed like a Wall Game of attrition. In contrast Newtown were more likely to put consecutive passes together. And in the second quarter they put together threes and the goals flowed.
After the game the muddied elbows and knees were hurriedly cleaned and covered, just in case a Council Health & Safety officer was lurking.
Rarely has the hackneyed phrase “will be better for the run” been more appropriate.
Congratulations to Michael for reaching the milestone of 50 games.
