Round 14 Match Report - U13
Drummoyne vs. Western Suburbs
The Drummoyne under 13’s hosted Western Suburbs this week at the newly refurbished Drummoyne Oval. Preparation for this encounter has not been our best due to the constant cancellation of training.
The Power started well with the first two goals for the game. The first to Caley, straight in front of the sticks. The lead up to the second goal was a great example of forward running and team play. The hit out from the centre ball up by Spider was the catalysis for Matt to attack and pop up a superb kick to Michael on the run, then an accurate kick on to Luke straight in front of goals. Luke booted the goal for his first for the game. The power went to the first quarter break 12 to 25 down.
Although starting a little slow in the second quarter and allowing the opposition to kick an early goal, the boys became very involved in the game and played a style they had not previously displayed. Defense was a key in containing West’s, with Alex leading the way with long kicks to get the opposition out of their 50 meter zone. Lachy fought hard with the taller opposition and gained great territory with his defensive kicking. The power worked hard at the ball and applied pressure against their more fancied opponents. DT set the play up after taking a great mark, for X’s goal in the dying moments of the second half.
Power commenced the second half trailing West’s by 13 points. In the forwards and on the wing Michael and Will provided reliable targets for Matt to burst down the centre of the field. They were well supported by Alec , Cameron and Ben. All were hungry to get the ball and covered plenty of ground while at the same time, manning up on some of the more damaging opponents. Power contained their opposition to 7 points in the third quarter.
Power started the final quarter trailing by 14 points. The boys tackled, chased and ran all day and gave their opponents a scare early in the last quarter with a quick three goals to Luke, Callum and Matt. Coming up against stronger opposition the boys proved they are a competitive side with a lot more of improvement still to come. All the power boys made a contribution and although not getting the points they proved to themselves they can match it with the best.
There was no ‘Dancing with the Stars’ on the boundary by Hamish this week just an inspiring show of boundary umpiring.
Thank you to Mr. Perry for waving the little white flags and to our guest runner Greg Egan.
The final score Power 39 defeated by Wests 51
