Round 2 Match Report - U11 Teal
Drummoyne 11.6 (72) defeated Western Suburbs 5.5 (35)
We welcomed back a few more old timers at the weekend. Charlie, Eddie and James responded with terrific games. Charlie is always safe under a high ball but when he’s in the forward fifty, he’s positively dangerous. He marked and scored our first goal like a pro. Running out of the centre, Rohan was a menace to the opposition and a tearaway in attack. After experimenting with his left foot on the run, he backed up a few minutes later to pot our second goal.
There was a flash of blond that terrorised Wests in the opening term, the smiling footy assassin we often saw last year as the last man standing in the backline. It was Revenge of the Fullback on Saturday. Eddie pounced on a loose ball, found space to kick, was blocked, got the ball back, tried to kick through arms and legs. On the third effort he could not be denied and kicked a goal. Soon Eddie was back for more. Another goal. Then Joe won a contest, stood firm and with a pinpoint handball found Eddie in front of goal who duly potted his third for the quarter.
In the next term we kept Wests scoreless thanks to Darby, the hard man of Teal, Riley the denier of any attack and Sean, always first to the ball. Gabe was playing a blinder, ripping the ball out of arms, making space out wide and putting the ball out in front of team mates on the lead. James and Andrew took some great marks and put great pressure on their opponents. Eddie helped himself to a fourth goal, while the big booted Joe got a big piece of the footy and slotted an absolute beauty of a goal. That inspired Charlie who also sunk the slipper into the leather and drove the ball long and straight between the posts.
Wests came back at us like terriers in the second half and our intensity dropped off a bit. But not Gabe or Riley, competitive and hungry to the end. After tackling his heart out, Gabe was rewarded with a very well-taken goal. Riley again covered more ground than a crop duster and was always our best looking option in the forwards.
In the final quarter, Rohan potted his second for the day, thanks to great domination in the centre and rucks by Joe, who was strong in the air and tidy with the rolling ball. Sean had a busy day, Lars showed flashes of power and passion, while Jordan, Alex and Tim never dropped off in their team play and enthusiasm. Eddie and Charlie loved the spotlight, while the senior players built the victory platform in a slick first half. But after two games, it’s Gabe that has brought his game to a new level and we anticipate big things from this talented fellow over the coming season.
