Round 2 Match Report - U8s
Under 8 - Teal
The newly-formed Teal team had a strange start, changing fields and teams a number of times before the final arrangement against Wests was confirmed. Once play got started, the team warmed into the match and the parents witnessed lots of effort and some excellent performances.
Zayn had a wonderful first match, with lots of running and passing. He made a few nice marks and scored a goal. Angus and Edward did well in their second game of AFL, with good kicking and great defence. Edward made the Mark of the Day and was asked to play up for the Under 9s afterwards. Another new player – Hugh – was really in amongst the action and started the match with a great tap, followed a little later by a very nice pass.
Some of our returning players showed renewed zeal. Toby was really excellent in defence and positioned himself strongly on the mark throughout the game. Oscar.H had his best game ever, with lots of running, kicking and involvement in the action, particular when he was in centre position. Darcy returned for his first match of the season with some nice kicking and marking. Darcy made up for his missed week by playing up for the Under 9s afterwards. Oscar.L and Meera were a little quieter this match, but showed plenty of enthusiasm at training. Rory was good in defence, with some great work in the backs. Alistair performed a nice change-in-direction kick to surprise the opponents in the last period and was good in defence.
Well done Teal.
Under 8 - Silver
After proudly bursting through the team banner and running onto the field, the Under 8 Silver team played an evenly contested match against Glebe. While Glebe seemed to have the upper edge in the first period, there was some nice play from Drummoyne. The Power came back strongly in the second period and the last period of the game was fairly evenly matched. All in all, this under 8s match was quite a fiercely contested one.
Christian seemed to control the centre, with a couple of good long kicks. James also showed off a big kick, sending the ball right down into the forward line after marking strongly in the centre. James showed a strong pair of hands - taking several solid marks and pushing the ball into the forward line with some big kicks. Liam played well in defence, doing well to smother opposition attempts for goal. Daniel showed some real skill with the ball, ducking and weaving around opposition players. Joe, in his second ever game of AFL, looked like he was warming into action with some nice kicking and really strong defence.
Nicky showed determination and took a few really solid marks. Despite receiving a nasty knock, Riley got up stoically to keep on playing. Well done Riley. Similar determination and focus was shown late in the game by Jack, when he collided with an opposition player while marking the ball. (The opposition player retired hurt, but looked okay a short time later.)
A highlight of the match was a brilliant passage of play, with Christian throwing his body in to smother an opposition kick, passing to Joel, who took an absolute screamer. Joel then passed to Jack who kicked it through for a minor score. A short time later Christian and Joel were teaming up again - this time to produce a goal from Joel. Good teamwork guys.
We also saw some fabulous goal kicking from Kosta, Jack, Riley and Christian.
It was a very nice second match of the season in a team with many new players.
