Round 9 Match Report - U10
Drummoyne U10 vs Maroubra Saints
It was fantastic to return to Drummoyne Oval on what can only be described as a perfect winters day.
The boys took on the Maroubra Saints, who have the reputation of a highly skilled and co-ordinated outfit and one that’s always a “tough nut to crack”.
The boys put together one of their best first quarters of the year, with Liam, Jonah, Thomas, and Ewan assuming full control across the centre line. Sam Rider’s dominance in the ruck gave these guys possession which enable them to deliver the ball deep into our forward line. The back line was also solid with Angus, Jack and Will Heine not giving their men an inch and also clearing the ball with long kicks to position. The highlight of the quarter were the three goals kicked by Matt (2) & Bailey (1) , especially Matt’s “Nick Davis’” snap from centre half forward.
Going into the second quarter with a two goal lead proved to be key factor in the game. Yes, Maroubra regrouped and played the tough brand of footy we know them to be capable of. The scoring in the second & the third quarters saw them peg back our lead by three points. While they put our backs, centres and forwards under considerable pressure it was great to see our players stand-up to the Maroubra onslaught. Especially pleasing were the efforts of Michael L. Thomas, Lindon, Josh & Lewis who all contributed to the task of restricting the Saints movement on the scoreboard.
The fourth quarter saw those who played in back and forward lines rotate positions, which enabled Angus to unleash his goal kicking ability with two “Didak” like snaps for two majors. This gave “the Power” the break we were looking for and ultimately saw the team run out victors in a truly fantastic game.
The overall highlights were Ewan’s dominance across the centre line. His marking and kicking to position was outstanding and he deserves to recognised as ”best on ground” . Will Heine played a great game which in reflection I think will go down as one of his best. Goal of the day goes to Matt, but closely followed by Angus’ snap in the last quarter, and Bailey’s dogged attack in the first.
As you all know next Saturday will see the Sydney Swans play their arch rivals in Collingwood. But wait for it - we too play our arch rivals the East Blue at the “house of pain” Trumper Park. So please train well on Wednesday night and be ready for what will the first of two blockbusters scheduled next Saturday in Sydney.
Finally I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Marcus Della Marta to the team, and thank him for playing with the Maroubra team as his first introduction to Aussie rules.
